Masses and services in Derry for Ash Wednesday and Lent

Extra Masses and services will take place in Derry on Ash Wednesday and during Lent.

A number of services will be taking place over the next six weeks to mark the season of Lent during the 2016 Year of Mercy.

On Ash Wednesday ashes will be distributed at Masses in St Eugene’s Cathedral at 8.00 am, 10.00 am, 12.30 and 7.30 pm. During Lent, Mass will be celebrated in St Eugene’s Cathedral at 12.30 p.m. each week day, beginning on Ash Wednesday. Morning Prayer of the Church will take place at 7.45 am Monday to Friday.

At St Columba’s Church, Long Tower, ashes will be blessed at the 10.00am Mass and distributed at Masses on Wednesday. A Holy Hour will take place at the Long Tower each Sunday during Lent from 5.00pm.

At the Waterside Parish ashes will be distributed at St Columb’s Church at 7.30 a.m., 10 a.m. and 7.30 p.m; the Church of the Immaculate Conception at 9.15 a.m. and 6 p.m.; St Mary’s Oratory at 10.15 a.m. and St Oliver Plunkett Church at 9.15 a.m. and 7p.m. Extra Masses during Lent will take place in St Columb’s Church at 7.30 a.m. Monday to Friday and at St Oliver Plunkett at 7 p.m. each Friday evening during Lent.

Holy Family parish will have an extra Mass, Monday Friday at 5.00pm beginning on Ash Wednesday, in addition to the Masses at 10 a.m. and 7.15 p.m.

At Steelstown parish Mass times for Ash Wednesday are 7.45 a.m. 10 a.m. and 6.30 p.m. Ashes will be distributed at all Masses. On the Sundays of Lent at 6pm Steelstown will have an hour of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament.

The following Masses will take place at the parish of the Three Patrons: St Patrick’s Church, Pennyburn, Monday to Friday 7.30 a.m. and 10 a.m., Wednesday at 7.30 p.m. and Saturdays at 10 a.m; St Brigid’s Church, Carnhill, Monday to Friday 9.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m., Thursday 7.30 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m; St Joseph’s Galliagh, Monday to Saturday 10.30 a.m., Monday, Tuesday and Friday at 7.30 p.m.

Mass for staff and students at Magee College will be celebrated on Ash Wednesday at 1pm in the Great Hall. Ashes will be distributed at this Mass

St Columb’s Cathedral is to host a series of hour-long, lunchtime panel discussions this Lent as part of its contribution to the Derry and Raphoe Diocese’s ‘Year of Opportunity 2016’.

The series will begin this Thursday 11th of February at 1.05 p.m. when broadcaster and columnist Anita Robinson, academic Dr Aine Downey and teacher Ken Thatcher will answer audience questions on the theme of ‘Children’.
